Event Description
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of History and Politics of Drexel University present
“Beilis and Blood Libel in the Bronx” a lecture and book-signing by Dr. Robert Weinberg, Department of History, Swarthmore College.

Be part of the book launching of Bob Weinberg’s Blood Libel in Late Imperial Russia, a path-breaking documentation of the early 20th century’s blood libel cause célèbre. Presenting the primary sources that chart the case of Mendel Beilis, accused of ritual murder of a Christian boy in Kiev, concocted by right wing forces and police, with no direct evidence, Weinberg establishes a firm basis for understanding the event.

Weinberg will discuss world reaction, especially in America, Beilis’s acquittal, arrival in America, where he published his memoirs that served as a model for Bernard Malamud’s book The Fixer and a film with the same title. The Beilis case is the prooftext for continuing to learn the legacy of anti-Semitism.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Books will be sold by the Penn Book Center. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies.
