The BEES Graduate Research Seminar is a weekly series of scientific presentations by faculty, graduate students and outside speakers. The seminars are opportunities for learning about and discussing ongoing research in the department and current issues in biodiversity, earth and environmental science.
Title: Past, Present, & Future: Coral Reefs in a Changing World
Speaker: Lisa Rodriguez, Villanova University, Marine Environmental Science Laboratory
Description: Coral reefs are relatively fragile ecosystems, living within a narrow range of climatic and physiological requirements. As such, natural and human-caused changes to the world’s tropical oceans are expected to be detrimental to reefs. Their unique algae-animal symbiotic relationship and skeletal structure make corals well-suited for recording past environmental changes, measuring changes currently underway, and may be useful for predicting future changes. The research Lisa will present relies on a combination of physiological and stable isotopic analyses to assess the impact of changing environmental conditions on coral reefs.

About the Seminar: The BEES seminar is a course requirement for Ph.D. graduate students. Students are required to attend and give a presentation on their thesis research. Outside speakers are hosted by a department member and typically visit labs and have discussions with the students.
