Event Description Dr. Patricia A. Shewokis, professor in the Nutrition Sciences Department in CNHP and in BIOMED, and Dr. Hasan Ayaz, research assistant professor in BIOMED, will discuss how near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) based optical imaging systems have been widely used in functional brain studies as a noninvasive tool to monitor changes in the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (deoxy-Hb). Based on the NIRS technique, Drexel University’s Optical Brain Imaging team has developed a functional brain monitoring system (fNIR) to assess cognitive activities of healthy subjects and patients. fNIR is a portable, safe, affordable and negligibly intrusive monitoring system that enables the study of cortical activation-related hemodynamic changes in various field conditions. This presentation will focus on select applications of fNIR, including human performance assessment, such as cognitive function monitoring of ground control operators while piloting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), depth of anesthesia monitoring, neuroprosthetics, and brain-computer interface for locked‐in patients. Moreover, members of the team will be speaking about the current fNIR designs, principles, and procedures implemented during aforementioned studies.
