Event Description
Title: A Study of Rutherford Scattering Using Modern Computing Techniques
Physics Major: Owen Montgomery
Abstract: Rutherford scattering is a phenomenon first observed by Ernest Rutherford in 1911. He was limited by the technology of his time. In this project, we will attempt to use modern computing techniques to design a more robust experiment than could have been built by Rutherford 100 years ago, and use it to find patterns in and to attempt to enhance our understanding of about Rutherford Scattering, show that with proper knowledge of the parameters computer models can be just as accurate as nuts and bolts experimentation, and to accurately simulate a scattering experiment so that students can try varying scattering conditions, without necessitating the use of large and dangerous sources of radioactivity.
