Gospel music will be performed by Rev. Joseph Williams and the Sons of the Birds. An authority on African American music, Rev. Williams and the group will present a program drawn from the "quartet" tradition of Black gospel music. The group name derives from the fact that its original membership included singers who were sons of the world famous Dixie Hummingbirds.
Also appearing on the concert will be actress, singer, and historian Anita Singleton-Prather, a resident of Beaufort County, SC. Ms Prather is an authority on the Gullah/ Geechee culture of the South Carolina Sea Islands. Appearing as "Aunt Pearlie Sue," Ms. Prather will involve the audience in her presentation of Gullah music and culture.
This evening of music, culture, history and audience participation will take place on Thursday, June 8th at 7:00PM at the Mandell Theater, 33rd and Chestnut Streets on the Drexel University campus. The performance is free and open to the public. For additional information, please call (215)895-2451.
