Psychology Fall Colloquium: "Stress: Mindfulness, Stress Reduction Pathways, and Health"
Start Date: 11/4/2013Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Date: 11/4/2013End Time: 8:30 PM
Event Description
J. David Creswell, PhD - Psychology and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, Carnegie Mellon University

This talk will describe a program of research exploring the brain and physiological basis of stress reduction in mindfulness and mindfulness meditation practices. Laboratory and intervention studies will be presented showing that mindfulness is associated with changes in stress processing networks in the brain; reduced biological stress reactivity to acute stress challenge; reduced pro-inf lammatory gene expression in immune cells; and improved health outcomes in stressed patient populations. Challenges facing researchers and clinicians when offering mindfulness training will also be discussed, along with research on delivering mindfulness training to hard-to-reach patient populations. Discussion will focus on the clinical implications of these findings.
