End Date: 11/23/2012End Time: 5:00 PM
Event Description
Find out what it takes to keep live animals at the Academy happy and healthy? Meet our animal keepers and see how they train live animals for educational programs. Make and take a craft that shows what is needed for keeping live animals safe and happy.

Live Animal Discovery Weekend activities include:

Animal Encounters
Keep your eyes peeled all day as animals (and their handlers) roam the halls for up-close-and-personal animal encounters.

Live Animal Center Giving Tree
Help us take care of our live animals. The ornaments on our Live Animal Center Giving Tree tell you exactly what our animals need. Simply choose an ornament from the tree, purchase the item described, and bring the gift back to the Academy to be given to our animals throughout the upcoming year.

Ask a Keeper
11 a.m.–1 p.m., 2–4 p.m.
Have a pet-related question? Stop by our Ask the Keeper booth and get some answers and advice on taking care of your furry, feathery, and scaly family members.

They Really Eat That?
Check out some of the wildest (and most nutritious) foods we feed the Academy’s live animals. Try some of the creative ways we introduce food to our animals to keep them engaged and well-fed!

Live Animal Shows
11 a.m., 1 and 2:30 p.m.
Visit the Auditorium and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on our critters. Learn how we train our animals for classes and shows and how our animals came to live with us. Hear some great stories starring your favorite Live Animal Center residents.

Live Animal Center Bingo
How well do you know the animals of the Live Animal Center? Come play this interactive game to get the real story of some of the LAC’s residents and learn a few things about their wild relatives.

Animal Care Wheels
Make and take a craft that helps you figure out what some of our critters need to be healthy and happy. Choose from Benny the Moluccan cockatoo, Eduarda the box turtle, or Pocono the chinchilla.

Vulture Verses: Love Poems for the Unloved with children’s author Diane Lang
11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Many books about snakes, spiders, and other often-feared creatures focus on the threatening or alarming aspects of these animals. But all animals have their place in nature. Ms. Lang points out the laudable aspects of each—even flies and mosquitoes—with enthusiasm, and in rhyme! Listen as she reads from her book, and meet some of her more surprising live animal companions.

Live Animal Weekend is also held on November 24 and 25. Free with museum admission.
