Global Innovation in Healthcare – Driven by Students and Communities Worldwide
Start Date: 2/21/2014Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 2/21/2014End Time: 5:30 PM
Event Description
Dhairya Pujara, founder and CEO of the Ycenter, located in Philadelphia, PA, will discuss global innovation in healthcare and how the ratio of doctors to population in most of the provinces in Mozambique, Africa is 1:40,000, an incubator in some places is made with car parts, heart surgery in India costs $1,583 (as compared to $106,385 in the United States), and micro-insurance for farmers in the developing world costs as little as 22 cents a month. While an economic giant like the U.S. struggles with delivering affordable healthcare to its citizens, there are small and significant innovations happening globally in the field of healthcare. Communities throughout the developing world are facing some of the toughest challenges, and while many of the problems have to do with limited resources and are economic in nature, there are several other societal and cultural aspects tied to these issues, which are largely systemic. The question arises - can we do something about this? If yes, then what and how? Living in India for 22 years and a 5-month journey to Mozambique provoked Dhairya to use a knack for entrepreneurship and his biomedical engineering skills to take a step towards driving a change that empowers communities and fosters innovation. Ycenter aims to take that step through keystone student projects, community collaboration, and measurable impact. For more info, please visit www.biomed.drexel.edu.
