This summer Drexel University is engaged in broader impacts outreach that directly enriches girls in STEM education!
Faculty and students from Drexel University are partnering with Girls, Inc. of Philadelphia to offer a unique experiential learning opportunity for middle school girls this July. The College of Engineering is hosting 24 girls at the Innovation Studio, and in labs and classrooms across Drexel’s campus for a week-long STEM GIRLS summer program.
The girls will learn about STEM subjects through workshops organized and taught by 46 different faculty and students from across the College. They will mentor and motivate young girls from the City of Philadelphia who have not had the opportunity to interact with and learn from STEM experts on Drexel’s campus. Our goal is to address the gap that begins to emerge in the middle school years among girls from underrepresented communities by creating a girls only summer STEM program that captures their interest and provides a supportive and fun environment to learn about STEM subjects.
Our long-term plan is to offer the Drexel STEM girls summer program every year.
Here are some important details:
Dates: July 24 – 28, 9:00 am to 5 pm
Daily workshop sessions: 9:30-12:00 and 1:30-4:00
Each workshop session will be attended by 8-10 girls with 1-2 Girls, Inc. coordinators
Workshop locations: Innovation Studio, labs, classrooms, or in the field
Some of the workshops offering this year are:
(Nariman Mostafavi and Hamed Yassaghi, Architectural Engineering). The girls will be building bridges out of spaghetti and testing their strength.
(Brandon Terranova, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics). The girls will have the chance to design and 3D print a keepsake. There will be a brief overview of 3D printing followed by an activity where we will go through a series of exercises, culminating in an object that each attendee will have designed themselves.
(Mira Olson, Environmental Engineering). The girls will build water filters to clean a muddy water sample.
(Ezra Wood, Chemistry). The girls will learn about phase transitions and carbon dioxide by doing experiments with dry ice.
(Aaron Fafarman, Chemical and Biological Engineering). The girls will synthesize a solar cell in the lab. |
