Event Description

As part of the EAGLES program at Drexel, the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department is hosting a visiting professor from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid.  Dr. Rafael Borges will be presenting seminars on air quality modeling over the course of three 2-hour lectures.

Part 1: Thursday 8/15: 2-4 PM in Room AEL-275

Part 2: Thursday 8/22: 2-4 PM in Room AEL-275

Part 3: Thursday   8/29: 10 AM to 12 PM in Room AEL-275

Dr. Borges will also be available to discuss any specific questions you may have about air quality modeling.

Seminar: Air Quality Modeling: overview and experiences

Air quality models (AQM) are an essential tool to understand the fate of pollutants in the atmosphere. AQM describe the physical and chemical phenomena involved in the dispersion and transformation of pollutants from their emission sources to ambient air quality levels. The use of AQM is widespread for both research and regulatory purposes and currently there is a wide variety of models. This course will provide a brief review of the fundamentals and applications of main model types, highlighting the main assumptions and limitations. Illustrative examples of real applications of some model types will be shown and discussed to provide a better insight of model capabilities and requirements, paying special attention to emissions. Emissions constitute a key input for AQM in most practical applications. The basics of emission inventory compilation and/or adaptation for modeling purposes will also be covered in the seminar.
