The Musical Sound of Shabbat Prayer in Istanbul: Between Tradition and Innovation
Start Date: 8/13/2015Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Date: 8/13/2015End Time: 11:00 AM

Event Description
The Judaic Studies program presents a lecture by Joseph Alpar, doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Based on recent years of fieldwork with synagogue cantors and their congregants, this talk will uncover the dynamic complementary interaction between local, Ottoman Turkish and Judeo-Spanish traditions and newer East European and Israeli musical influences.

The audience will be treated to Sabbath (Shabbat) music making at contemporary Istanbul synagogues and lively lunches at the home of the local Ashkenazi Chabad rabbi. We will follow the path of today’s Orthodox Turkish Jews as they broaden the scope of their religious experiences.

Joseph Alpar is an accomplished singer and instrumentalist of Middle Eastern music, playing santouri and darbuka, and organizing concerts of ensemble performance.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies. Info: judaicstudies@drexel.edu, 215-895-6388.
