"A History of Greening in West Philadelphia "
Mural Celebration
PHS : Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
has a long history of working with gardeners throughout West Philly. Almost nowhere else in the city can you find such a concentration of tight-knit gardens woven into the urban fabric. From its origins as the "country homes" of city dwellers to the 1970s roots of PHS’s Philadelphia Green program to a present-day network of dozens of PHS City Harvest gardens, West P
hiladelphia continues to embrace its green heritage. And on this site, the former home of University City High School, which once boasted a landmark community garden and greenhouse, the tradition continues in the form of the PHS Pop Up Garden. With support from LoLa38, PHS created this mural to celebrate the rich past, present and future of gardening in West Philly. Hear from Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Julianne Schrader Ortega, Vice President, Chief of Programs as we gather to honor the history of greening in this area and celebrate the addition of this temporary mural to the community landscape.
