Event Description

An introduction to the Boren Awards, Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), and other opportunities that fund language study abroad. Please register in advance

The Boren Awards, an initiative of the National Security Education Program (NSEP), fund undergraduate (up to $20,000) and graduate (up to $24,000) U.S. citizens to study less commonly taught languages in world regions that are critical to U.S. national security and under-represented in study abroad. The awards promote long term cultural and linguistic immersion in countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

To be eligible for the Boren Scholarship, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate program, and remain enrolled until you have completed the scholarship.

To be eligible for the Boren Fellowship, you must be applying to or enrolled in a graduate program, and remain enrolled until you have completed the fellowship.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, that offers intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and to apply their critical language skills in their future careers.

To be eligible for the CLS, you must be a U.S. citizen, and enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application.
