The chemical industry at a glance is intended to provide the chemistry student with an orientation as to the relationship between energy, chemicals and the economy that ultimately lead to attractive career opportunities and our modern way of living. The outlook for oil as an energy source will be described along with factors which determine its price since it impacts the cost of all chemicals produced. A Petrochemical complex will be outlined which illustrates how oil and gas are converted into basic feedstocks that fuel the entire industry and what key decisions are made daily to produce the chemical product slate. The advent of shale gas in NA will be shown as a key driver for global competitive advantage. The rise of China as a chemical producer has been dramatic in recent years and we will explore their use of coal to support their chemical production. Finally the global economy and its outlook will be examined since it determines the demand for durable and non- durable goods which drive chemical production, investment and employment in the industry. For our upcoming college graduates the career choices are many but within the chemical industry itself there are virtually unlimited options and career paths to choose. It is hoped that my profession journey along with this overview provides the college student and upcoming graduate a broader perspective on the structure of the industry when it comes time to plan the next phase of your life (your career!).
