End Date: 11/15/2012End Time: 6:00 PM
Event Description
Join International Area Studies and the Office of Equality & Diversity for International Café! This month will feature guest speaker Joel Oestreich, PhD., Director of the International Area Studies program and Associate Professor of History and Politics at Drexel. Dr. Oestreich, recipient of a Fulbright award, will share his latest research from nine months in India. In addition to his lecture, a photography installation of his travels will be exhibited till mid-December in the James E. Marks Intercultural Gallery. The reception and opening of the exhibit will directly follow the lecture.

The breakneck pace of development in India has lifted millions out of poverty and made India a global economic powerhouse. But has the rapid growth really helped the poorest of the poor in this vast country? Have women, untouchables, indigenous peoples, migrant laborers, and other discriminated-against groups been helped? Along with the United Nations Development Programme and other donors, India has struggled to make sure that growth is inclusive and that human rights are part of the very definition of what it means to develop. Learn about what India and its partners are doing, and what this means for how economic development is understood around the world.
