Event Description
This
panel will explore how algorithms are changing criminal law
enforcement. From policing to sentencing, criminal justice institutions are
being transformed by technological change. The event will bring
together an interdisciplinary group of experts from academia, industry, civil
society, and public service to identify and explore some of the
most urgent challenges relevant to this transformation: ensuring
accountability and fairness for individuals affected by new programs, advancing
values of privacy, transparency, and openness, and accounting for
institutional considerations and constraints within government. The panel will
feature advocates, public officials, and noted experts to survey how the city of
Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania are confronting the challenges
and opportunities raised by algorithmic governance.
Participants
will include: Rachel López, Drexel (moderator); Mark Bergstrom, Executive
Director, Sentencing Commission; Mark Houldin, Policy Director, Defender
Association of Philadelphia; Nyssa Taylor, Criminal Justice Policy
Counsel, ACLU of Pennsylvania; and Hannah Sassaman, Policy Director, Media
Mobilizing Project.
