Careers in Environmental Sustainability Webinar

Event Description
The Drexel University School of Public Health is pleased to present the upcoming Careers in Environmental Sustainability Panel webinar as part of our Career Development events. The webinar event will be hosted on September 25, from 4:00 to 5:00 PM (EDT).

This event is designed to connect public health undergraduate and graduate students; as well as public health professionals to information about careers related to environmental sustainability.

Panelists:

Maggie Breville
Maggie Breville is an Environmental Scientist/Program Manager at the U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development. She oversees millions of dollars in federal grants. During her quarter-century in public service, she has monitored New York City’s drinking water, worked on cleanup of a Superfund site, and pioneered the EPA’s process of peer review for research grant proposals.
Peggy Shepard
Peggy Shepard is the co-founder and executive director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice. She is a recipient of the 10th Annual Heinz Award For the Environment and the 2008 Jane Jacobs Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Shepard served as the first female chair of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and is co-chair of the Northeast Environmental Justice Network. She is a former member of the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council of the National Institutes of Health and a member of the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Ms. Shepard serves on the Institute of Medicine’s committee: Ethics of Housing-Related Health Hazard Research Involving Children, Youth, and Families.
Palak Raval-Nelson
Palak Raval-Nelson is the Director of Environmental Health Services for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. In her role as Director, Palak is responsible for the Environmental Engineering, Vector Control, Childhood Lead Prevention and Food Protection programs. She has been working for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health since 1996 and began her career as a Sanitarian. Palak also serves as adjunct faculty at Drexel University’s School of Public Health and teaches Environmental and Occupational Health. She has presented many papers at NEHA, PPHA and APHA and has had several publications in the National Journal of Environmental Health. In 2008, she had her first book published: Breast Caner Politics: An Evaluation of the Current Funding Policies. She has also graduated from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute. Palak has her BS in Biology from Temple University and her MPH from MCP Hahnemann University graduating with the distinguished Hiega Society Award and her Ph.D. in Environmental Health and Policy from Drexel University. She was recognized in 2006 by the Society of Women Environmental Professionals as an outstanding woman environmental professional for the Delaware Valley. Palak was nominated and received the AFDO Achievement award as a newly employed Sanitarian in the San Antonio, Texas, at the 1999 Conference.
Paul Bunje
Dr. Paul Bunje works to bridge the gap between scientists and decision makers to help society respond and adapt to the challenges of climate change. He is the Executive Director of the UCLA Center for Climate Change Solutions, where he facilitates innovative research and communicates between scientists, decision makers, educators, and the public about climate change science and solutions. Dr. Bunje is also the Managing Director of the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC). He leads LARC in its mission to encourage greater coordination and cooperation at the local and regional levels by bringing together leadership from government, the business community, academia, labor, environmental and community groups. Dr. Bunje is leading the production of “A Greater L.A.—The Framework for Regional Climate Action and Sustainability”, LARC’s flagship climate action and sustainability plan for the 10 million people of Los Angeles County. He is also a member of the City of Los Angeles’ Green Retrofit Development Advisory Council and an advisor to Clean Tech Los Angeles. Previously, Dr. Bunje was a Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where he worked on climate and water policy. He is trained as a biologist, having received his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Bunje has lived and worked in Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific, providing first-hand insight into the diverse political and cultural environments in which scientists and policy makers build sustainable communities.
