Event Description
Join Archivist Clare Flemming and Entomology Curatorial Assistant Greg Cowper for an evening highlighting the extraordinary efforts of George Vanderbilt’s 1934 African Expedition.
Each year we invite you to join us as we reveal stories behind early Academy explorers and their expeditions around the world. See the dioramas and study specimens that are a part of these pioneers’ legacies. View the explorers’ field journals, correspondences, hand-drawn maps, vintage photographs, and a wealth of related records from the Academy Archives.
This year’s program, led by Clare Flemming and Greg Cowper, will highlight the extraordinary efforts of George Vanderbilt’s 1934 African Expedition. At age 20, this scion of the renowned Vanderbilt family organized a 10-month collecting expedition to equatorial Africa to secure material for habitat groups that are still on view in the Academy’s Gorilla and Okapi dioramas.
