Event Description

Dr. Fred Abbate, a long-time, popular instructor in the Pennoni Honors Program, died on Friday after a short illness. Dr. Abbate was a professor of philosophy whose courses were both rigorous and playful. They included The Mind of Sherlock HolmesThe Logic of the Jack the Ripper CaseShakespeare as Philosopher; and Terrorism and Torture, among others. In 2013, he led a group of students from his Jack the Ripper course to London to retrace the steps of the murderer and explore the remnants of Victorian London in the modern-day city.

Dr. Abbate was the first recipient of the Pennoni Honors Program Teaching Award and was involved with numerous programs and events associated with the College. He was a playwright, poet, musician, and novelist as well as a devoted follower of Aristotle. He loved philosophy, and he loved his students. His passion, knowledge, and humor will be missed.

There will be a memorial luncheon for Dr. Abbate on Friday, September 8 at noon at the Westin Hotel at 555 Fellowship Road, Mt. Laurel, NJ.  If any students would like to attend, please contact Dr. Dougherty at dd446@drexel.edu.
