Adding Parallel and Distributed Computing to the Computer Science Curriculum using Raspberry Pis
Start Date: 7/25/2017Start Time: 11:00 AM
End Date: 7/25/2017End Time: 12:00 PM

Event Description
Speaker: Prof. Richard A. Brown, Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, St. Olaf College

We are all immersed in a world of parallel and distributed computing (PDC), ranging from personal multi-core cell phones to the expansive remote cloud computing-powered services they interact with.

How can we give CS students everywhere the essential PDC concepts they need to understand the day-to-day computing they use?  We describe a module-based approach for incrementally adding PDC to existing courses in appropriate contexts, and consider the range of computational platforms available for providing hands-on experience with PDC technologies.

We will also offer audience members an opportunity briefly to try an inexpensive PDC teaching platform based on a Raspberry Pi single-board computer. The physical presence of a Pi piques student interest, and helps to make some PDC concepts concrete.

Audience members are invited to bring a laptop for the demo.
