See firsthand how we take care of our live animals and learn from the stars of our dioramas all day at the Academy.
Throughout the Museum
Keep your eyes open for live animal encounters as animals wander the halls with their handlers.
Come face to face with Eddie, our very own roaming T. rex as he greets visitors in the museum.
Meet some of the live animals that call the Academy home during this live animal show. Discover their stories and learn what you can do to help their wild cousins.
In this interactive stage show, get set for an adventure as you help prepare would-be scientists from the audience for an expedition. What do Academy scientists need when they go into the field for their research? The answers might surprise you!
Fur, Feathers, and Scales
Learn how what’s on the outside counts for the Academy’s live critters during this live animal show.
Our keepers work hard to make sure our live animals are happy and healthy. See what goes into a tortoise’s lunch and how we make a parrot’s toys.
North American Hall
The animals in our dioramas may be a little less lively than our live animals, but they still have a lot to teach us. Touch real furs and see the striking skulls of the animals of North America.
Real science comes to life through roaring, thrashing, life-size animatronic dinosaurs and awe-inspiring stories of prehistoric Earth. The exhibit also features full-size Jurassic Period dinosaur skeletons, real fossils and fossil casts, hands-on activities, and the latest stories about dinosaur behavior and appearance.
Stop by to see one of our live animals enjoying time in an exercise pen and get your critter questions answered. (noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.)
Explore your wild side and make a skunk mask and snake bookmark to take home.
Live Animal Day is part of All-Star Week (Friday through Monday, December 27–30), when the Academy celebrates its most popular attractions with live animal shows, museum specimens, craft making, and storytelling. Free with museum admission.
