Female Genital Cutting & Sexuality Conference

Event Description

The Philadelphia International Women's Project (PIWP) will be hosting our second annual Female Genital Cutting & Sexuality Conference on Tuesday, July 24, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the New College Building.

This event will bring together experts from the fields of OB/GYN, sex therapy, trauma psychology and community health to discuss the psychosexual aspects of female genital cutting (FGC) as well as approaches to wellness interventions. Join experts in sex therapy and mental health for a day of lectures and discussion surrounding therapy and techniques for treating psychological, sexual, and medical complications of FGC.

This event is FREE and open to OB/GYNs, pediatricians, family practitioners, internists, sex therapists, psychologists, social workers and all other women’s health professionals, advocates and students. Breakfast will be included. CME Type II credit will be available.

About the Speakers
Alex Robboy, a certified sex therapist and a board-certified sexologist, is the founder and director of the Center for Growth Inc./Sex Therapy in Philadelphia. Since 2017, she has provided group sex therapy sessions to West African and Sudanese immigrants. She will discuss preliminary findings from this work.

Ishraga Dousa and Salimatou Sy are peer education specialists for PIWP based at the African Family HealthOrganization (AFAHO). As health educators, interpreters, service linkage coordinators and clinical escorts, they play a crucial rolein supporting immigrant women affected by FGC.

Joanna Vergoth is the founder and executive director of forma, a nonprofit organization that provides mental health services to women with FGC, and also participates in psychoeducational outreach, as well as outreach to hospitals, universities and other organizations to educate others on FGC and its impacts.
