Physics Colloquium: "In Search of Supermassive Black Holes"
Start Date: 10/30/2014Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 10/30/2014End Time: 4:30 PM

Event Description
Gordon Richards, PhD, associate professor, Drexel University

Their existence no longer a subject of debate, black holes are now considered an important building block in the universe. I will discuss how my group is finding supermassive black holes by listening to how they "sound" and through not only X-ray vision, but also infrared vision. As with all astrophysical sources, to do most science with supermassive black holes we first need to know their distances and their masses. I will discuss how we are overcoming the challenges of these problems as we seek to understand the roles that supermassive black holes play in the development of galaxies.
