Details:
Demand for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles; in particular, viral vectors and virus like particles, has risen due to increased demand in the gene therapies, cell therapies and advanced vaccines markets. As with most large biologic molecule manufacturing processes, the complexity of the molecule dictates the complexity of the expression system and purification strategies, which accounts for the majority of the production challenges of the next generation biotherapeutics.

Dr. Bardliving will outline his recent research with industry collaborators on strategies for vector yield optimization of adeno‐associated virus (AAV) in a microbial system and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling towards improved process parameter optimization in column chromatography for this class of biologics. He will also describe the growing opportunities for students in biopharmaceutical manufacturing with an emphasis in cell and gene therapy in the greater Philadelphia region.

Biosketch:
Cameron Bardliving, PhD, is Director of Process Development and Operations at the Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) and Assistant Professor in the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce at Jefferson. JIB is a 25,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art single use good manufacturing practice (GMP) simulated training facility dedicated to closing the workforce development gap in bioprocessing and biomanufacturing through hands-on training of industry professionals and students.

Dr. Bardliving has over a decade of experience in academia and industry, with a focus in bioprocessing and biopharmaceutical processing development. Prior to joining JIB, Dr. Bardliving was an Assistant Professor in the Amgen Bioprocessing Center at Keck Graduate Institute, where he led research activities with industry partners in the areas of continuous biomanufacturing, computational modeling, and emerging therapeutics.
