Junior Scientist Virtual Workshop: Who is my Great-Great-Grandfish? - Morning Session
Start Date: 1/23/2021Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 1/23/2021End Time: 11:30 AM
Event Description

Join us for a virtual workshop with hands on activities designed to be done at home with easy-to-find supplies.

Most of the ancient creatures who once walked on the planet or swam in the seas are extinct, so how do we know about them? Well, the story behind the great diversity of life on Earth is told with fossils! Explore the rock-solid evidence that helps us understand how new groups of backboned animals arose during the long history of life. Find out who your ancient aquatic ancestors were (and we mean REALLY ancient … almost 400 million years old!) and discover how scientists use transitional fossils to piece together the past. Experiment along with us to test the winning (and losing!) designs we see in the fossil record to find out how nature’s ways set us up for the most success.

You’ll meet Academy scientist Ted Daeschler, PhD, curator of vertebrate paleontology and professor in the Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science Department at Drexel University. Ted’s favorite prehistoric fish is Hyneria lindae, a 365-million-year-old lobe-finned fish from right here in Pennsylvania. Ted claims the worst food he ever ate while working in the field was a potato chip sandwich.
