Title:
Pediatric Concussion: Insights from Epidemiology, Biomechanics, and Clinical Medicine

Speaker:
Kristy Arbogast, PhD
Co-Scientific Director
Center for Injury Research and Prevention
Co-Director
Minds Matter Concussion Program
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)

Details:
Dr. Kristy Arbogast will share research findings across disciplines of epidemiology, biomechanics, and pediatric sports medicine regarding concussions in youth. Topics of focus include who sustains concussions, how do they sustain them, and what objective neurological deficits do they present with. In addition, results will be shared from research using head impact sensors to quantify the exposure experienced by youth athletes.

Biosketch:
Kristy Arbogast, PhD, is the Co-Scientific Director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention and Co-Director of the Minds Matter Concussion Program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the R. Anderson Pew Endowed Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. As a bioengineer, her research focuses on injury biomechanics and the effectiveness of safety products concentrating on the protection of youth in motor vehicle crashes and pediatric concussion.

Dr. Arbogast co-leads Children’s Hospital’s research effort in concussions with a focus on the use of head impact sensors to understand the biomechanics, utilizing bioengineering technology for objective measures of concussion diagnosis and leveraging the electronic health record to define the natural history and time course of concussions in children. She co-leads an initiative for the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Players Association to design and implement head impact sensors to define loading conditions in professional football to enhance head protection.
