of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Iowa, titled "Modeling Social Vulnerability to Floods."
Hear about innovative public health research and practice that is happening locally, nationally, and globally with a focus on improving population health and eliminating health disparities at the Dornsife School of Public Health's annual Population Health Spotlight Series.
The 2021-22 year theme, "Climate, Justice and Health," is dedicated to confronting climate change and its impact on population health. The call for climate action has reached a tipping point as the adverse effects of our warming planet like persistent droughts, extreme weather patterns, poor air quality, and wildfires continue to increase. It has also become more evident that marginalized communities will bear the brunt of climate change, and its impacts can further exacerbate unequal social conditions. As we address this threat worldwide, leaders in this fight must consider that not all effects are felt equitably and develop solutions accordingly.
About the Speaker:
Eric Tate, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of Geographical & Sustainability Science
College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Iowa. Tate’s research examines intersections natural hazards and society, with particular focus on vulnerability indicators, flood loss estimation, and geospatial modeling. At Iowa, he teaches courses on water resources, natural hazards, environmental issues, and environmental justice.
Tate earned a BS in Environmental Engineering from Rice University, an MS in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Texas, and a PhD in Geography from the University of South Carolina.
Each event supports one credit hour towards National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) Certified in Public Health (CPH) continuing education credit.
