Event Description

Join us for a panel discussion about how people are managing the financial risks of living, working and playing amidst extreme weather.

Your neighborhood was built in a floodplain, yet you can’t afford flood insurance. Your home is flooding more and more frequently, and you’re noticing cracks in your foundation. What do you do next, and can anyone help?

Your area has seen an uptick in the number and intensity of wildfires. Your home has burned and you’ve rebuilt. Now, your insurer decides that offering fire insurance isn’t worth the risk to their bottom line. Where does that leave yours?

Join experts from the Academy and Drexel communities for a discussion about how people are managing the financial risks of living, working and playing amidst extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change. At this virtual event, our panel will explore how booming coastal communities might fare in the face of devastating storms that levy billions of dollars' worth of damage at each turn, how sea level rise is impacting communities nearby and why the growing number of natural and human-made disasters are impacting risk, both financial and otherwise.

This is a free, virtual event. You will receive Zoom information link upon registration.

Panel:

  • Yeonsil Kang, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of History, Drexel University
  • Carol Collier, Senior Advisor for Watershed Management and Policy, Patrick Center for Environmental Research
  • Peter Austen, Academy Trustee, Former Chair Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
