Event Description
Drexel
University’s Center for Military and Veteran Services has partnered with
Eternal Soldier at Penn Museum, Penn Veterans Collaborative, and Penn Office of
Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs to present this
in-person/virtual program featuring three distinguished individuals who will discuss
their experience with battle recovery, also known as Combat Search and Rescue,
followed by a moderated discussion with the audience. Sheila Murnaghan PhD, Penn Classics Professor,
who will discuss the ancient Greek warrior Ajax, who retrieved Achilles' body
from the Trojan War battlefield after he had been slain with an arrow to his
heel and the Museum's famous vase painting of this episode on display in the
Greek Gallery. Drexel
Alumnus (LeBow ’72) and U.S. Army Colonel Thomas Matthews, a commander of the
1993 Battle of Mogadishu, a mission also known as “Black Hawk Down”
will reflect on his role just as the 30th anniversary of that battle passed. The
battle was the subject of the 1999 book “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War,” and the 2001 movie
directed by Ridley Scott, which Matthews advised during its development. American
soldiers were pinned down under heavy fire after a failed attempt to capture a
local warlord and Col. Matthews, a decorated helicopter pilot, will compare
these events to those surrounding Ajax. And, Veteran, Capt. Jessica Stephenson,
an Army helicopter pilot who conducted CSAR missions in Operation Enduring
Freedom in Afghanistan will discuss her experiences and will highlight her work
with Eternal Soldier. There will be Q&A with audience members after the
panel. The Penn Museum will also be open
free of charge for guests to explore the collections.
