Pyrosecurity: Or, How to Secure Combustion on a Flammable Planet
Start Date: 11/13/2018Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 11/13/2018End Time: 1:30 PM
Event Description

Wildfire – or "bushfire" in Australia – is a global environmental problem that increasingly impacts human and nonhuman life. As the incidence, severity and economic costs of bushfires grow in fire-prone regions, such as Australasia, established and novel actors wielding diverse forms of expertise are seeking to ‘secure’ combustible landscapes in different ways.

This presentation by Timothy Neale, Deakin University, will present ethnographic reflections from two sites of ‘pyrosecurity’ in northern and southern Australia, where technical and human agents — practitioners, policymakers, institutions, technologies, and tools — are engaged in the reduction and management of fire’s fallout.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by the Center for Science, Technology and Society and the Department of History.
