Title:
The Story of The Axiom Anatomic™ Ankle Replacement System: A Novel Implant System Born from a Partnership Between Drexel University and Kinos Medical

Speakers:
Sorin Siegler, PhD
Professor
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM)
Drexel University

Brian Garvey, MS
CEO
Kinos Medical, Inc.

Details:
Total ankle replacement (TAR) is rapidly becoming the treatment of choice for end-stage osteoarthritis of the ankle. The treatment consists of resecting the bones whose articular surfaces were damaged by arthritis and replacing them with artificial articular parts that ideally should replicate the natural functional morphology of the ankle. Despite the recent increase in popularity of this procedure, failure rates resulting from implant loosening, wear, and failure are unacceptably high. A major reason is believed to be the non-anatomical surface geometry of the articulating TAR surfaces that produce unnatural motion and unnatural forces and stresses.

In this talk, the two main collaborators, Dr. Sorin Siegler and Brian Garvey, will discuss the scientific discovery and biomechanical studies that followed, providing the foundation for the development of the AXIOM ANATOMIC™ Total Ankle Replacement System, which accurately replicates the functional morphology of the ankle. This will be followed by the story of how a scientific discovery made at an academic institution has led to a successful academic-industry partnership and the establishment of a commercial entity–Kinos Medical-which is dedicated to turning scientific discovery into a successful clinical reality for solving end-stage ankle osteoarthritis.

Biosketches:
Sorin Siegler, PhD, is a Full Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Drexel University. He is a member of the International and the American Societies of Biomechanics, ASME, International Foot and Ankle Biomechanics and the Weight Bearing CT International Group. Dr. Siegler has published over 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and over 120 scientific abstracts. Dr. Siegler's research focuses primarily on orthopedic biomechanics, with particular emphasis on foot and ankle biomechanics. His current research in this area includes development of total ankle replacement systems, image-based 3D modeling of the foot and ankle, joint interaction analysis through distance mapping, and club foot research. His work and is funded by the National Institutes of Health, private foundations, such as the Coulter Foundation, and several industrial partners, such as Kinos Medical.

Brian Garvey is co-founder and CEO of Kinos Medical. He is a serial entrepreneur, having spent his entire career developing new, orthopedic technologies that improve patients' lives. Brian is a named inventor on several patents and pending patent applications. He earned a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering at Drexel University, utilizing the co-op program to launch into the medical device industry with Globus Medical. He started as a product development engineer several years prior to Globus’ successful IPO. Brian’s first start-up was an end-stage orthopedic device manufacturing company, Axiom Finishing Company (AFC). AFC was established to shorten lead times in the manufacturing of spinal implants and was acquired after three years by its largest customer. After AFC, Brian was an executive at Flower Orthopedics, launching the first Ready-for-Surgery™ implant platform and successfully created a new market in the orthopedics area. Aside from Kinos, Brian is a co-founder and president of Mission Surgical Innovations, a commercial-stage company, with a growing product portfolio to address extremity nerve conditions.
