Event Description
Population Health Spotlight I: MACRA and the Future of American Medicine

Jay Bhattacharya, PhD, Professor, Health Economics and Health Policy Stanford University

The Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 instituted a fundamental change in the way that Medicare pays physicians. Under MACRA, physicians will be graded on the costs and quality of care they provide, with high quality, low cost providers receiving substantial bonuses (and low quality, high cost providers receiving substantial penalties) for the care they provide. In this talk, Bhattacharya will discuss the measures that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will measure costs of care to judge physicians, and consider the implications of this landmark legislation for the future of American medicine.

Bhattacharya is a Professor of Medicine, Economics, and Health Research and Policy (by courtesy) at Stanford University. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research, a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Stanford Freeman Spogli Institute, and Senior Research Associate at Acumen, LLC. Prof. Bhattacharya’s research aims to understand the constraints that vulnerable populations face in making decisions that affect their health status, and in particular how government policies designed to benefit these populations actually affects the lives of people in such groups.  He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications at economics, statistical, medical, and health policy journals. Prof. Bhattacharya received his Ph.D. in Economics and his M.D. from Stanford University.
