History Seminar: Above Nations and their Economies, Lawyers and the International Patent System
Start Date: 12/5/2024Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 12/5/2024End Time: 1:30 PM

Event Description
Over the past decade, the history of intellectual property has developed into a dynamic field of study. However, the internationalization of patent systems remains under-examined, despite its major importance in the global economy, as highlighted by the Covid-19 crisis. This research explores the initial phase of patent systems internationalization, beginning with the 1883 Paris Convention—an effort to harmonize diverse national patent cultures—and extending through the early 1950s, a period marked by the global reconfiguration following the Second World War.

This seminar is presented by Joël Praz, a PhD Student in history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. Joël's research is part of the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project (2022-2026) “The Internationalization of Patent Systems: From Patent Cultures to Global Intellectual Property” under the direction of Prof. Jérôme Baudry, head of the Laboratory for the History of Science and Technology.
