Junior Scientist Workshop: What do Plants Have to Say? - Afternoon Session
Start Date: 2/13/2021Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 2/13/2021End Time: 2:30 PM

Event Description

Join us for a virtual workshop with hands on activities designed to be done at home with easy-to-find supplies.

We know plants can’t talk, but how do they make their needs known? Although they may be quiet, plants still have plenty to say. Learn to interpret the unique signals that plants send, from “Stay away!” to “Help me move!” Explore plant chemical defenses, as well as plant and animal interactions. Examine Valentine’s Day flowers and fruits to discover all the ways that plants communicate with friend and foe. Enjoy a guided taste test of chocolate, peppers and other botanicals to find out just how good plants are at saying what they need to say.

You’ll meet Academy scientist Tatyana Livshultz, PhD, associate curator of botany. Tanya loves plants and they make her appreciate even more that humans have consciousness and mobility. Her favorite ice cream is perfectly botanical: banana chocolate.
