Ann Sussman is an architect, author and teacher who researches how buildings influence people emotionally. Using environmental psychology, eye tracking and other biometric tools, she provides designers with insights into the mind’s conscious and subconscious reactions to form and space. Her 2015 book, Cognitive Architecture, Designing for How We Respond to the Built Environment (co-authored with Justin B. Hollander), won the 2016 Place Research Award from the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). Last year, Sussman and Hollander published Urban Experience and Design: Contemporary Perspectives on Improving the Public Realm. In 2020, she also co-founded The Human Architecture + Planning Institute, Inc. It is dedicated to improving our understanding of the human experience of place and she serves as its president.

The Arfaa Lecture Series is presented by Drexel's Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism.
