Title: The Effects of Victim Race on Racial Discrimination in the Law Enforcement Response to Hate Crimes.

Hate crimes are on the rise in the United States and elsewhere. Federal data from 2020, the last year before a change in how these crimes were recorded, showed an overall increase in hate crimes of 32% compared to the year before. Despite the pressing policy and safety concern created by these crimes, a significant gap exists in how hate crimes are understood relative to similar offenses without a racial, gender, religious or other motivation. Using data from the United States (The National Incident-Based Reporting System; NIBRS) and South Korea, this talk will examine problematic racialized discrimination in how law enforcement responds to the minority victims of hate crimes.
