Area Manager, CH2M
Principal Project Manager and Chief Engineer,
CH2M Ports and Maritime Group

From Senior Design to Reality

Graduating engineers frequently step into industry with a firm idea of the nature of the work they will be doing and a deliberate plan to develop in their professional careers. Sometimes the path they end up on is a significant departure from their original plan. In this lecture, Chris will attempt to provide some insights into a career in engineering by reviewing the variety of opportunities he has had while following a torturous path through nearly 30 years with the same company. The lecture will culminate with a discussion of the design and construction of the Moin Container Terminal, the largest infrastructure project in the history of Costa Rica, and its surprising similarities to the Senior Design project he worked on at Drexel in 1985.

Christopher A. Lawrence, PE, is the Area Manager for CH2M in Philadelphia and a Principal Project Manager and Chief Engineer with CH2M’s Ports and Maritime group. Chris received both his BSCE (‘85) and MSCE (‘87) from Drexel University. He joined CH2M in 1988 after a brief period as a research engineer at the then fledgling Geosynthetic Research Institute, also at Drexel. Chris started as a geotechnical engineer in CH2M’s Milwaukee office, transferring home to Philadelphia in 1994. As a geotechnical engineer, he has supported a large variety of environmental, water, and transportation projects ranging from remediation of some of the most severely contaminated sites in the Country, to deep rock tunnels for combined sewer overflow, to complex highway interchanges. Since 1999, Chris has largely been focused on construction and modernization of marine terminals, including every significant container terminal in the Port of New York and New Jersey, three of the four automated terminals constructed in the western hemisphere, and the Paulsboro Marine Terminal, the only new terminal constructed on the Delaware River in nearly 50 years.

This annual lecture is made possible by the generosity of Andrew Pennoni ’91.
