Change-makers: The urgency of this political moment calls for strategic action, committed resistance and the strength to continue building grassroots movements for justice, peace and collective liberation. The severity of this moment also calls on us to nourish our hearts, sharpen our arrows and strengthen our "practices of resilience" for ourselves and our communities. These are times for radical healing, for grounding into our power, for collective care, and for building on our capacity to bounce back from the vicious attacks on our community members and loved ones, bounce back with strength, focus, determination and fiercely courageous hearts. If you're about that long-haul investment in free dom for our communities, this is an offering YOU can give yourself! Join us Friday, March 10th to gather as a community as we reflect, meditate, drink tea, practice yoga, and express ourselves through writing/art/poetry.

Bring your yoga mat if you have one, and an open and loving spirit.

This is a FREE public event sponsored by Africana Studies - Drexel and co-presented by Drexel PEN Society and Leonard Pearlstein Gallery

About our instructors:

Jean-Jacques is a Haitian-born artist, father, and teacher living in Philadelphia. He started painting in his father’s studio, before he could walk, and later studied at the University of the Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He found yoga while at art school in 2001, and has delighted in consistent practice and study since. In both art making and asana, he honors the power and potential of rituals and inspired creativity. Jean-Jacques studied Ashtangta in Southern India, receiving his first yoga teacher certification in 2007, and became a certified AcroYoga teacher in 2008. He completed an Anusara teacher training in 2011, and completed YogaHour Teacher Training with Darren Rhodes in 2013.
He is a Level 2 Certified AcroYoga instructor, and teaches immersions, workshops and classes that foster play, power, pliability and presence. He has also enjoyed teaching compassionate communication workshops to young people, teens, and adults, in prisons, public schools, summer camps, yoga studios, and workplaces. Jean-Jacques paints portraits, in oil and gouache, that aim to capture bits of beauty both inner and outer. He loves the opportunities to steep in story that live portraiture provides.

Sheena Sood (she/her/hers) is a second-generation South Asian, activist scholar, yogini goddess femme and healer. Sheena carries much love, passion and commitment for the preservation of ancestral knowledge, holistic health, community well-being and social justice. In 2011 and 2013, she journeyed to her homeland to learn about yoga and spirituality under her Guruji Yogi Sivadas at Kailash Tribal School in McLeodganj, India.
Sheena is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at Temple University. Her dissertation research explores how South Asian American organizations define their political agendas, mobilize their communities toward political action and build campaigns and cross-racial solidarity. As a healer activist, Sheena works to expand how frameworks of healing can be applied in radical, inclusive ways for justice and collective healing. As a healer activist dedicated to the well-being of her Philly community, Sheena has co-created spaces such as “Free Your Mind, Free Mumia, Free Them All,” "The Healing Circle," "Decolonizing Yoga as an Ancestral, Artistic and Life-Affirming Practice," and "Yoga for the Spirit." After graduating from Temple, she intends to open a healing justice institute in Philly, a community-based research and holistic health center.
