Event Description

In honor of Women’s History Month, CCI's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and the Drexel Women in Computing Society (WiCS) are hosting a Conversation with Marisa Porges, PhD and Danica Pascavage: A Shared Commitment to Empowering Women.

  • Dr. Marisa Porges is known for her work on leadership, education, and national security. She is currently the eighth head of The Baldwin School, a 130-year-old all-girls school outside of Philadelphia renowned for academic excellence and for preparing girls to be leaders and changemakers. Prior to joining Baldwin in 2016, Dr. Porges served in the Obama White House; was a visiting fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and at the Council on Foreign Relations, where her research focused on worldwide counterterrorism efforts; and served in the U.S. Navy as one of eight female aviators in an air wing of about two hundred.
  • Danica Pascavage is the Philadelphia lead for TechGirlz. TechGirlz is a nonprofit program of Creating IT Futures, a nonprofit that inspires middle school girls to explore the possibilities of technology to empower their future careers. Danica was a technical instructor for 18 years, beginning her career at IBM. She created and taught courses throughout the United States, focusing on AIX System Administration and Shell Scripting. After working at IBM, she began teaching Red Hat Linux classes. Danica was elated when she learned about TechGirlz’s mission. After taking her daughter to a workshop, she was hooked and volunteered to teach her first TechGirlz workshop in 2015. Pascavage has a BS in Mathematics from University of Maryland and an MS in Education from Gwynedd Mercy University.

Hear both speakers talk about their journey, the obstacles they’ve overcome, what inspires them, and their tips for success!
