Amy Bush, PhD (Drexel Work-In-Progress Faculty Colloquium) "Law in Plato's Republic"
Abstract: Are laws the best way to maintain a society, or must a society also rely on shared customs and the good habits of its citizens in order to remain flourishing and just? Can laws perform an educative function, as well as a regulative function? Can laws alone prevent extreme inequalities of wealth?
My paper addresses these questions through an interpretation of Plato's "Republic" because in this book, there is a curious absence of the role of a system of law in the building of the ideal city. External legal enactments are limited in value, because they do not insure "lawfulness' within the soul, whereas internalized habitual and social practices, encourage, and draw upon, the spontaneity of virtues that are the focus of the ideal city's organization, upon which the city must depend in order to prevent extreme inequalities in wealth. |
