Start Date: 3/7/2017Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 3/7/2017End Time: 3:30 PM

Event Description
The Judaic Studies program and the Department of History of Drexel University present “Genocide: The Idea and Its Inventor,” a lecture and book signing by Berel Lang, PhD, professor emeritus, Department of Philosophy, University at Albany, State University of New York.

Berel Lang joins us to talk about his new book, "Genocide: The Act As Idea" (University of Pennsylvania Press). He will discuss the concept of genocide: its significance, distinctiveness, and the problems it raises. This analysis will be paired with an account of Raphael Lemkin, the concept’s ‘inventor’ and the person largely responsible for its acceptance and use.

Lang is also the author of: "Act and Idea in the Nazi Genocide," "Writing and the Moral Self," "Holocaust Representation: Art within the Limits of History and Ethics," "Philosophical Witnessing: The Holocaust as Presence," and "Primo Levi: The Matter of a Life."

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Books will be sold by the Penn Book Center.  Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies.
