International research opportunities, whether a short trip to the field or a year abroad on a Fulbright, are often extremely appealing to graduate students as a way to access new data, collaborate with innovative colleagues overseas, work with one-of-a-kind laboratories or equipment, or gain a new perspective on their work. However, the challenges of maintaining a supervisory relationship with these students and keeping them on track to complete their degree requirements understandably gives many faculty mentors pause. This panel brings together faculty with experience supporting doctoral students in pursuing and conducting funded international research opportunities, for a frank discussion of the challenges and rewards of working with students motivated to go abroad.
