Event Description
College of Computing & Informatics' Department of Information Science presents a Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Churchill on "The Past, Present & Future of HCI and UX"

The talk will be hosted through Google Meet, and a link will be sent out the morning of the talk. Register via Eventbrite to receive login info.

About the Talk:
HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and UX (User eXperience) are key areas for any product, platform, service, or market design. Based in Human Factors and Ergonomics, HCI emerged in the 1970s as a field of inquiry, largely as a result of the increasing penetration of computers and computational devices into the workplace. UX emerged in the mid-late 1990's and 2000's, in large part as a result of digital innovations, the proliferation of Internet services, and increasingly affordable devices like laptops, cellphones, and tablets. Consumer uptake and market competition meant the industry needed to understand why, when, and how people engage with and/or abandon digital experiences. Companies needed to create the best experiences for lay people and for experts.

Both HCI and UX focus on maximizing the usability, usefulness, effectiveness, accessibility, and delightfulness of digital products, platforms and services, and all the devices through which we connect to them. HCI and UX are nimble, innovation-focused disciplines covering a range of perspectives that affect our experience of technology. Across hardware and software, from screen to operating system, and engaging with all the changes to the technological landscape, HCI and UX professionals address and (re)design everyday digital interactions, invent new methods to understand current and emerging needs, and generate new insights into human nature and behavior that point to possible future innovations. In this lecture, I will share a personal history of my career in HCI and UX, present some past and present challenges, and speculate on the future of these fields of endeavor.
