Event Description
Join us for a virtual workshop with hands on activities designed to be done at home with easy-to-find supplies.
Are there wild animals living just a few steps from your own home? Right in our backyards, nearby parks and even on city sidewalks, animals are everywhere. Enjoy an exclusive meet-and-greet with live animal ambassadors from the Academy. Discover how their adaptations allow their wild cousins to survive and thrive among us. Examine the finer details of mammals, reptiles and birds, and brainstorm ways to help share the world with all living things. Learn how to craft outdoor spaces that welcome wildlife and make a special backyard feeder.
You’ll meet Karen Verderame, live animal programs developer and invertebrate expert. Karen says the weirdest thing in your backyard is probably … everything! The diversity of species never fails to surprise her. In addition to caring for the live animals of the Academy, Karen has a variety of creatures of her own living in her house, including dogs, cats, reptiles, chinchillas and tarantulas named Marzipan, Gazpacho, Octavia, Penelope, Gwyn, Sparkles, Roni, Ruby, Socks and Piggy.
