Muscle Adaptation Following Injury and Disease

Details:
Muscle is a highly adaptable tissue that is often impacted following injury and disease. This talk will explore how after a neural injury, peripheral or central, the passive mechanical properties of hand and wrist muscles change. Then, using computational modeling, understand how these biomechanical changes impact the ability to use the hand. Additionally, we will explore how the structure and composition of muscle contribute to healthy muscle passive mechanics to begin to understand how and where these muscles adapt after injury.

Biosketch:
Benjamin Binder-Markey, PT, DPT, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences with an affiliate position in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University. He directs the Multiscale Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. His work integrates physical therapy, basic science, and engineering principles through experimental and computational modeling methods to better understand how changes in muscle properties following injury or disease affect physical function. This work aims to develop new technologies and interventions that significantly improve patient care and outcomes.

Dr. Binder-Markey has received funding from the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research, American Heart Association, The Brinson Foundation, and The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Catalyst Fund for this work. He completed his postdoctoral training in the Biologics Lab at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago). He completed his DPT training and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Binder-Markey received his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware.
