Event Description Wonderful Middle Schools students need YOU!
All across the country the education gap is widening, and Philadelphia is no exception. As quality education becomes harder to find, students are being left behind. The Lindy Scholars Program under the Center for Civic Engagement wants YOU to volunteer as a Tutor and Mentor for 6th-8th grade students in the Powelton area. Middle school students, known as 'scholars' are paired with Drexel students and twice a week, and they meet at the middle school to tutor in math and literacy, assist with homework, and have fun! On select weekends, the scholars and their Drexel mentors, known as 'Advisors' will meet on Drexel's campus for fun mentoring and social activities! These activities help the scholars understand and practice various soft skills needed to be successful in life. Past activities include cooking, dancing, arts-n-crafts, and working with various student groups! On occasion, we will go on trips with the students and their families! This opportunity is open to all students and all majors, including graduate students. Prospective mentors should be able to commit to tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. as well as 9:30 to 2 p.m. every other Saturday this Spring. Benefits include workstudy (for those who apply), a participation award of $250, food, and free transportation.
