The next CASTLE Pedagogical Happy Hour will be led by R. Andrew Hicks, PhD, Professor of Mathematics.
"Satz Beweis and the Socratic Method"
In the spring of 1985 I took a course in point set topology at Queens College, taught by Edwin E. Moise. The course consisted of a numbered list of theorems without proofs. In each class meeting it was the students' job to provide the proofs at the board and convince their classmates that what they were saying was valid. In the last thirty years, I've taught many courses where the students presented 95 percent of the time. These courses usually employ the Satz Beweis approach of Edmund Landau, whose minimalist textbooks started with a few definitions and axioms and then proceeded: theorem 1, proof 1, theorem 2, proof 2,... Sometimes the students are not given the proofs, but sometimes they are. The common active ingredient in these approaches is essentially the Socratic method.
Speaker Profile:
R. Andrew Hicks received a BA in Mathematics from Queens College, CUNY in 1988, an MA in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. He taught mathematics and studied computer science at Penn in 1995-96, and from 1996-1999 was a postdoc in the GRASP laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, performing researching on vision based control of autonomous robots. He has been an assistant professor at Drexel since 1999.
