Event Description
Join us to celebrate the 20 year legacy of the STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars Program! Throughout July and August 2022, Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs will host a weekly lecture series, during which Drexel faculty and STAR alumni will give presentations about their experience with and the impact of the STAR Scholars Program. Attendees may join us virtually or in person, with lunch served for in-person attendees.

Speakers for Wednesday, July 27:

Mauricio Reginato, Ph.D. is a professor & Interim Chair of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Director, Graduate Program in Cancer Biology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is also Program Leader of the Translational Cellular Oncology Program at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Reginato received his B.S. in Biology at Penn State University, Ph.D. in Pharmacology from University of Pennsylvania and did his postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reginato’s lab is interested in understanding how oncogenes regulate cancer cell signaling and how they alter metabolic reprogramming. Dr. Reginato’s group was the first to show that a sugar modification called O-GlcNAcylation and the enzyme that regulates it O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) is elevated in breast, prostate and brain cancers and targeting OGT blocks tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Dr. Reginato's research group is identifying how these pathways may be used to treat cancers.

Katy Vieira is a graduate of Drexel's Health Science program (Class of 2020), and currently a graduate student in Drexel's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. She participated in Drexel's STAR program as an undergraduate sophomore, working with faculty to investigate the relationship between exercise capacity and physical activity level in athletes. Inspired by her STAR experience, she has since then co-authored an environmental case study with her sociology professor, Dr. Amanda McMillan Lequieu, titled "Coffee on a Hot Planet" in the journal Case Studies in the Environment. She is currently pursuing her DPT degree to become a licensed physical therapist, but is still actively seeking how best to apply her degree and practice.

Kyle Matthews is currently a 2nd year PhD student in the Drexel Nanomaterials Institute. Currently his work focuses on using MXenes for energy storage applications. His past undergraduate research experiences, including STAR, gave him ample knowledge and comfort in multiple research settings.

Ryan Measel received his B.S. in Computer Engineering (2011), M.S. in Electrical Engineering (2011), and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2015) from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His research spanned a variety of areas including wireless communication, mobile applications, network protocols, software defined radios, reconfigurable antennas, cellular infrastructure, and chipless RFID. Ryan cofounded and served as CEO of Fantasmo, a platform for large-scale 3D mapping and visual positioning. Fantasmo was acquired by TIER Mobility SE in 2022. At TIER, Ryan serves as VP of Engineering and works on bringing spatial awareness and innovation to lightweight electric vehicles.
