Event Description This presentation will cover the current national and international data and trends on substance use/behavioral disorders, the known positive effects of common substances and behaviors, how does someone get addicted, types of addictions, the signs and symptoms of a substance use disorder including medical consequences, e.g. red flags, what are the formal diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder, who is at risk for developing a substance use disorder, the role of co-occurring disorders, the impact on children and adolescents, what does recovery entail, what is the role of 12 step programs, how do you support and get help for your loved ones, colleagues and yourself. Induvial common substances will be discussed along with clinical examples.
Our speaker Barbara A. Schindler, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics is the 1990 founder and Medical Director of the Caring Together Program, an outpatient treatment program for women with substance use and psychiatric disorders in the Department of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine. She has also served as the Vice Dean, now Emerita, Educational and Academic Affairs, and former William Maul Measey Chair in Medical Education, at Drexel University College of Medicine. In her position as Vice Dean from 1996-2014, Dr. Schindler had responsibility for the admission and medical education of over 1050 medical students per year at multiple clinical campuses as well as continuing medical education (CME). This event is open to all faculty and professional staff. Registration is required in Career Pathway. Please note that registration closes 24 hours in advance.
