Dr. King day has been known as a direct service day on, not a day off and is a call to action for Americans to commit themselves to giving back to their communities.

In 2020, our nation, saw even more of the injustice that Dr. King was struggling with and spoke out against. This year, the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement will be honoring Dr. King’s Legacy with a Week of Service and Reflection which will be observed from Monday, January 18th through Friday, January 22nd. We will be offering a mix of virtual and in-person opportunities to the larger Drexel community and we hope that our fellow Drexel Dragons will join us in celebration and reflection of Dr. King’s legacy and scholarship. In such an unprecedented time, we hope to bring the Drexel community together to forge a new way forward; one that allows us to look to our past as inspiration and hope.

Join the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement by partaking in our week of Service and Reflection which will be taking place from Jan. 18th - 22nd. Check out our list of opportunities and events throughout the week. https://drexel.galaxydigital.com/dr-martin-luther-king-jr-week-of-service-and-reflection-/

Looking into the future, the need for rapid and effective response will increase, as recent history suggests that “extremes” may now be the “new norm.” Some of these (e.g., earthquakes) are thought to be “West Coast” problems, while some are attributed primarily to the East Coast (e.g., hurricanes). Rather than a reactive response, civil engineers should now consider a proactive position and develop designs for these new norms to minimize the devastating impacts on society.

This presentation will include two parts. The first presents a brief summary of several of the author’s primarily East Coast projects where extreme conditions drove the response and/or design. These include the impacts of recent hurricanes, construction over extremely soft sediments, and seismic response of dams and hazardous waste landfills. The second part will include a discussion regarding the evolution of design concepts from simple allowable stress and deterministic approaches to performance-based designs, risk-informed decision making, and resilient design considerations. Challenges to design and performance of civil engineering infrastructures may be the result of climate change and global warming, but also include the inevitability of strong seismic ground motions and construction over difficult ground conditions.

With that in mind, Human Resources’ A Healthier U Program is encouraging you to participate in our daily “Ten at 10” wellness program for faculty and professional staff. Include a link to this website, then check back Monday through Friday to complete the scheduled activity of the day. For larger departments, you might consider organizing activities into groups of 3-10.

If 10 a.m. is a not an ideal time for you or your department, please feel free to tweak the time to meet your needs. We encourage you to participate sometime before lunch if possible, to help you set the tone for your day.

Fridays are "Free-for-All Fridays." Visit the Ten at 10 Website to connect with resources that can help you take advantage of a simple but powerful body-mind reset. Please visit our website and click on "Free-for-All Fridays" to learn more.

You can also earn points toward the Wellness Incentive Program by

Fracked, Cracked and Discarded: Environmental Injustice and Plastics (1/22/2021)

As the climate emergency accelerates, we now find ourselves grappling with Covid-19 safety measures that have suddenly increased our reliance on single-use plastics – a major driver of fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In Drexel’s dining services, how can we support the need for student safety while minimizing the use of plastics?

Dr. Diane Sicotte, Associate Professor of Sociology at Drexel University, will present on her research on plastics and environmental justice. She will focus on environmental injustice generated by the global production networks that turn ethane (a natural gas liquid) into plastics and will examine environmental inequality and threats to health and safety from fracking, from converting ethane into plastic items at petrochemical plants, and from the disposal of discarded plastic items in the communities of people of color and the poor.
